The recent acquisitions with Tableau and Looker not only illustrate the high expectations for AI-driven analytics but also highlight how many Business Intelligence projects have failed or delivered far below business expectations.
This consolidation is occurring because of today's BI, or proprietary analytics tools, lack the data diversity needed to fuel Digital Transformation initiatives. Even in today’s modern technological era, it’s so complex to connect numerous data silos that it feels incredibly backward and labor intensive.
For instance, let’s look at Google and Salesforce's core businesses. They’re centered on collecting information and have become one of the biggest data collectors in the world. Because of this, they’re perfectly set-up to help solve BI data diversity challenges while still focusing on Artificial Intelligence.
Still, there’s a big catch. Most of your data is outside Salesforce or Google cloud.
To achieve true AI-driven analysis you need data diversity. This is achievable if you want to move everything into the cloud, but that involves moving data. This method still puts you in a box. It’s a win-win situation for organizations looking to have a standardized cloud platform to access all their data. The problem still remains for customers who are committed to an on-prem approach that still needs access to silos of data with Tableau or Looker.
In 2019 and beyond enterprises need Data Availability to get unified data access without data movement. Furthermore, analytics required to drive Digital Transformation need data diversity along with actionable intelligence-not custom dashboards. Data needs to be accessible and available across data silos to deliver enterprise knowledge.
It’s this simple - if any of your solutions start with, “I need to move my data,” it’s the wrong approach.
With my past experience of 20+ years helping launch Splunk and ZoomData it’s no surprise that Google and Salesforce have moved in this direction. However, it’s time we caught up and made data an asset rather than wasting time looking at approaches that are costly, timely and lock enterprises into proprietary platforms. Check out what we’re doing at Gemini Data to change the future of data infrastructure.
